Abstract
Detecting areas with overall crime rates is among the most important measures of controlling crimes. In this paper, principal component analysis was used to detect the states with the overall crime rate in Nigeria using the Nigeria Police Force crime data. Loading plots and score plots were used to plot the crimes and the states respectively. The first component identified Oyo state with the overall crime rate in 2008, while the remaining components identified the popular crimes in some of the states. Scree plot and cumulative proportions were used to identify the most important components to be retained that would explain sufficient variability of the data set.

Key words: Principal Component Analysis, Loadings plot, Score plot, Scree plot.
