The Federal University of Technology (FUTA) has emerged best institution at the second edition of the Nigerian Statistical Association Competition for Undergraduate Students (NSACUS). Meanwhile, Merua Ozomela from Micheal Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia emerged the overall best student.

MEMBERSHIP CATEGORY

MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES AND QUALIFICATION OF MEMBERSHIP

3.1 – CATEGORIES OF MEMBERSHIP

 

The association shall consist of the following categories of membership

 

(i)                 Ordinary

 

(ii)               Fellow

 

(iii)             Life member

 

(iv)             Honorary Fellow

 

(v)               Corporate Member

 

(vi)             Student Member

 

 

3.2 – QUALIFICATION FOR MEMBERSHIP

 

All categories of membership is open to Nigerians and non-Nigerians.

 

The following shall be the qualifications for the various categories of membership.

 

3.2.1. ORDINARY MEMBER

 

(I)                 A holder of a University degree in Statistics or its equivalent;

 

(ii)        Diploma/Certificate in Statistics from recognized institutions; or

 

(iii)       One who is, by profession, a Statistician and at least has a University degree.

 

In addition, ordinary membership is attained by election. A candidate for election must have attained the age of 21 and be proposed by at least two ordinary members who shall be admitted and has genuine interest in statistics. Nomination forms shall be obtained on application to the secretary. A candidate who in the opinion of the Governing Council is suitable for election as an ordinary member, but unable to find proposers may be proposed by two of the honorary officers of the association.

 

3.2.2 CORPORATE MEMBER

 

Any corporate body or institution approved by the Governing Council may be admitted as an associate member. Such an associate member may nominate a representative who, though subject to the Council’s approval, need not be an ordinary member and may attend meetings and conferences of the association. He shall also be entitled to receive the publication of the association, but may not be entitled to vote at any general or other meeting of the association.

 

3.2.3 FELLOW

 

An ordinary member distinguished for his contributions to the development or application of statistical methods or to the administration of statistical services may be elected a fellow of the association. Such member would have to apply or be nominated by two voting members of the Governing Council on a prescribed form. His nomination or application shall be recommended by the Governing Council with at least a two-third majority and ratified by ordinary majority at a General Meeting. There shall not be more than two fellows appointed in any one year.

 

3.2.4 HONORARY FELLOW

 

A person who has distinguished himself in his own field and has proven interest in statistics may be nominated by the Council and approved by the general meeting. He may attend meetings and conferences of the association but shall not be entitled to vote at any meeting of the association. There shall be no more than two honorary members elected in any year.

 

3.2.5 STUDENT MEMBER

 

Anybody undergoing a course in a recognized institution leading to one of the qualifications for ordinary membership is entitled to student membership. A student wishing to become a member should collect a form from the Secretary through the Nigerian Statistics Students Association who would certify his/her membership. A student member is not entitled to vote or be voted for.
